What We Do

A healthcare documentation specialist or medical transcriptionist, transcribes voice recordings from healthcare professionals such as physicians, with the end result of converting them into written documents. They may also proofread and edit other documents that were the product of a speech recognition software. They also help to interpret medical jargon to prepare the discharge summaries, medical histories, and other documents for patients.

Work Environment

Medical transcriptionists are mainly employed by private, local, and state hospitals. They are also found in physicians’ offices, as well as in administrative and support services. Meanwhile, around 10% of medical transcriptionists are self employed, which means that they are usuallyfree lancers. The majority work within offices but many also work from home, submitting all their information electronically.

How to Become a Medical Transcription

Although not regulated by law, most employers look for medical transcriptionists that have an understanding of medical terminology. An associate’s degree in medical transcription is available through a variety of schools. Alternatively, there is a certification program that usually only takes on year to complete.

Training & Certification Requirements

Certification is not required, but it is available. The Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist certification (RHDS) is offered by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity. They also offer the Certified Healthcare Documentation Specialist (CHDS) certification. Both require passing an examination and must be maintained through continuing education or credits. The RHDS is mainly for those who have worked less than two years and who specialize in a certain field. The CHDS, meanwhile, is for those with more than two years’ experience and who deal with a range of specializations.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), medical transcriptionists earned a median annual salary of $34,890 in 2015. This means that half earned less than that, and half earned more. The highest salaries were enjoyed by those with the most experience and had the best qualifications. The top 10% of earners earned $50,230 and above, whereas the bottom 10% earned $21,600 or less.

Medical Transcription Job Outlook

The BLS has reported that there will be a decline of around 3% in demand for medical transcriptionists between the years of 2014 and 2024. This is due to technological advances, including better speech recognition programs, which means there is less need for transcriptionists overall. That said, many physicians continue to feel out of touch with modern technology and prefer to have a transcriptionist on their team.
