What We Do
A mental health technician is also known as a mental health assistant or a psychiatric aide. These are a supportive professionals, helping to care for those people with mental illnesses or emotional problems. They work while supervised by mental health care staff, including doctors, psychologists, therapists, and psychiatrists. As part of their job, they are usually in charge of coordinating different mental health care services, but they also help in monitoring care and documenting it, assessing patients, and providing escorts for patients while ensuring their individual and personal needs are met.
Work Environment
Mental health technicians mainly work in private, local, and state substance abuse and psychiatric hospitals. In addition, they may also be found at the state government level outside of hospitals and educational facilities. Some work in private surgical and general medical hospitals, while others are employed in substance abuse and mental health facilities. Finally, they may also work in outpatient substance abuse and mental health centers.
How to Become a Mental Health Technician
Mental health technicians must hold a high school diploma or GED, or relevant experience and training. Most facilities look for those who have completed a two year associate’s degree program in a relevant field. Some of these mental health technicians do not last for long in this position because the use the experience gained from position and relevant qualifications, as stepping stones to becoming a registered nurse. The associate degree in mental health technology is the most popular degree, as it includes courses in group dynamics, psychology, and psychiatric nursing. Some, however, grow in the job by having been a hospital orderly in the past.
Training & Certification Requirements
There are just four states in which a mental health technician has to be licensed to perform their job. There are four different professional certification levels.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), all psychiatric technicians or mental health technicians earned an average annual salary of $31,140 per year. This means half earn more, and half earn less than this. Experience, education, certification, geographical location, and type of health care setting all have an influence on the average salary.
Mental Health Technician Job Outlook
The BLS expects that there will be a 5% growth in demand for psychiatric technicians between 2014 and 2024. This is below the national average. It is unclear why this growth is slow, particularly when considering that the stigma on mental health is being broken.
