The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Instrument Technician around the country.
What We Do
As an instrument technician, you will be responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all medical equipment. This is a very broad description for what is usually a very specific job. You may, for instance, have to replace any parts that are missing, have to keep records of any repairs that you perform, test the available equipment, show other staff how to use a particular equipment, and clean different medical instruments. Additionally, you are likely to work with many types of tools, including high vacuum sterilizers, autoclaves, gas sterilizers, and more.
Work Environment
Most instrument technicians are found in hospitals as members of a wider team. In addition, they may also be employed in a range of other facilities, including repair and maintenance companies, equipment manufacturers, and equipment wholesalers. Generally speaking, wherever medical equipment is being used outside of a surgery, an instrument technician will be there.
How to Become a Instrument Technician
In order to become involved in the job and responsibilities of an instrument technician, you must at least hold a high school diploma or GED. However, most employers now have more stringent requirements. They usually look for those with an associate degree, or even a bachelor’s degree. This all depends, however, on what type of area you want to specialize in. If you are not interested in learning about things such as advanced medical equipment, including hospital beds and wheelchairs, on the job training may be sufficient. This is usually done while being supervised by nurses or other technicians.
Training & Certification Requirements
Certification for instrument technicians exists, but that is not a legal requirement to work as one. That said, you will be making yourself far more marketable if you have invested in a certification. The Association for Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) provides three different types of certification courses and these are the Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES), the Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES), and the Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET).
