What We Do
A radiology technician is responsible for performing imaging procedures for diagnostics, which include x-rays. Some of these technicians specialize in the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technologies for the same purpose.
Work Environment
More than half of all radiology technicians work in private, local, or state hospitals. The others can be found in physician’s offices, diagnostic and medical laboratories, and some outpatient services.
How to Become a Radiology Technician
In order to become a radiology technician, an associate’s degree is generally needed. The majority of states also require a license or certification for radiology technicians to be able to practice their profession. Meanwhile, even in states where a license is not mandatory, employers prefer those candidates who have been certified. This is because it demonstrates a commitment to quality of care and professionalism. There are associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, and graduate certificates available for radiology technicians. Courses include classroom theoretical instruction on issues such as image evaluation, radiation physics and protection, patient care, pathology, and anatomy. Additionally, some practical experience would be provided.
Training & Certification Requirements
Most states require radiology technicians to be certified or licensed. The requirements for these certificates or licenses vary from one state to another. However, most will require that the candidate had graduated from an accredited program. There are a number of certifying bodies available that people can go to, including the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Individual state health boards maintain registries of certified radiology technicians and also set the requirements for maintaining this registration.
