The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Developmental Psychology around the country.
What We Do
A developmental psychologist is responsible for understanding the different stages of development during the lifetime of a person and how people progress through them. The focus for many is specifically on adolescents and children, although some prefer to concentrate on the needs of adults or even the elderly.
Work Environment
Around a third of all psychologists are self-employed and run their own practice. Those who don’t often work in private, local, and state secondary and elementary schools, for the government, for mental health practitioners, within private, local, or state hospitals, or within family and individual services.
How to Become a Developmental Psychology
To become a developmental psychologist, people must obtain a doctorate degree. This can either be the clinical Psy.D., or the research-based Ph.D. The Psy.D. is a more practical degree, whereby students spend a lot of time working directly with patients. With the Ph.D., the degree usually culminates in a thesis, which is a written, theoretical piece of work. Both options are available for developmental psychologists, as they can be involved in either the treatment of patients, or the study of human development.
Training & Certification Requirements
In order for people to be able to call themselves a “psychologist”, they must be licensed to do so. This is equally true for those who work independently. Every state has different regulations in place, however, also in terms of how a license can be provided. The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards lists the differences between the various states, as well as indicating how people can continue to be licensed. There is also the developmental psychology specialty certification, awarded by the American Board of Professional Psychology. This Board offers a total of 15 specializations within the field of psychology.
