The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Social Psychology around the country.
What We Do
Social psychologists are interested on how individuals and other people affect each other, and how these people interact with the social settings and social environments. Social psychology as a field of study is closely related to sociology. The difference lies in the fact that the focus of a social psychologist is on individual behavior, not that of the whole group as a sociologist would. In that regard, social psychologists examine how individual actions, thoughts, and choices are influenced by the actions, thoughts, and choices of the larger society. As a result, much of social psychology revolves around the study of interpersonal and group dynamics.
Work Environment
Social psychologists are found throughout a variety of sectors. They are often involved in research in universities, or they can teach the next generation of psychologists. Additionally, they often work in private sector organizations, including businesses. Overall, however, their role is highly research-based in nature.
How to Become a Social Psychology
Social psychologists need to have completed a doctoral degree in the field in order to use the job title. It is not generally required to hold an undergraduate degree specific to the field of psychology in order to be accepted to a master’s program and subsequent doctorate degree. Most social psychologists complete the Ph.D. in psychology, which is a research based degree. The other option is the Psy.D., which is a more practical and clinical degree option.
Training & Certification Requirements
All types of psychologists have to be licensed to practice their profession in a particular state. Requirements for licenses vary between states. Each state has also set its own requirements in terms of maintaining the license, which usually involves being able to demonstrate continuous education credits.
