What We Do
Health consultants usually work within the wider industry of health care to ensure that organizations are as efficient as possible. They are, above all else, management analysts but with a specific focus on health care related companies. They analyze how efficient they are, what their organizational structure is, how their budgets work, and more, after which they suggest ways and strategies for improvement.
Work Environment
Generally speaking, health consultants work either for themselves or for a consultancy business. They are then called into a health care organization for a period of time, either full time or part time, in order to find areas for improvement. In very large health care organizations, such as metropolitan hospitals, health consultants can also be employed directly by the health care organization, as it is constantly looking for ways to enhance its operations. Overall, however, they can be found working within any department of any type of health care organization, from local clinics to national insurance companies.
How to Become a Health Consulting
The employer will usually determine what the educational requirements are for someone to be able to work as a health consultant. However, a bachelor’s degree is almost always the minimum level required. More and more often, because there is a commitment to improving the overall standard of health care, companies are requiring someone who holds a master’s degree. The private health industry is particularly stringent on only hiring graduate degree educated professionals. Majors to consider include marketing, management, human resources, economics, and business. A minor in a health care related field is particularly beneficial.
Training & Certification Requirements
Certification is not a legal requirement to become a health consultant. However, those who become a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) are in much greater demand. This is because, by being a CMC, they demonstrate that they are committed to their own professional development and standards. The Institute of Management Consultants USA currently offers the CMC, which is valid for a three year period, after which re-certification is required.
