What We Do

A physical therapy assistant, or PTA, works under the supervision and direction of physical therapists. The goal of these healthcare workers is to assist patients who have sustained injuries or suffer from illnesses, in order to help them manage their pain and improve their movement. PTAs work directly with patients, providing care and assistance. Their tasks can also be indirectly related to the care of patients, however, for instance by setting up or cleaning treatment areas, performing clerical duties, and moving patients.

Work Environment

Just under half of all PTAs work in the offices of audiologists, speech and occupational therapists, and physical therapists. Others work in private, local, and state hospitals, or they can be found in skilled nursing facilities. Some work in the offices of physicians and others still can be found in home health care services.

How to Become a Physical Therapy Assistant

Every state has required that PTAs complete at least an associate’s degree from an accredited program in physical therapy assistance. In 2015, there were over 300 programs across the country that are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). It generally takes two years to complete these programs, and they offer a mixture of classroom study in areas, such as psychology, physiology, anatomy, English, and algebra, as well as practical experiences, including supervised clinical work. Many PTAs also complete first aid certifications and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certifications during their degree program.

Training & Certification Requirements

In every state, PTAs have to be certified or licensed. To become licensed, you must graduate from an accredited PTA program, after which you can take the National Physical Therapy Exam, which is administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. In some states, there is also a requirement to pass further examinations administered by the state. It is also common to have to be at least 18 years old and pass an enhanced criminal background check. To maintain certification and licensing, it is necessary to complete continuing education courses. Specific licensing requirements are made available by local state boards.
