The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Conflict Resolution around the country.
What We Do
A conflict resolution specialist is also known as an arbitrator, mediator, or conciliator, although there are subtle differences between those three titles. The job of this specialist is to ensure that conflicts can be resolved in an amicable way, without having to involve the courts. This is often done through open conversations, either with both parties present or individually.
Work Environment
The vast majority of conflict resolution professionals work within legal services. However, they can also be found in state and local governments, although rarely in hospitals or educational institutions. Many take on positions with professional, civic, grant making, or religious organizations. Lastly, they are often found in insurance and finance.
How to Become a Conflict Resolution
Becoming a conflict resolution specialist means having the right education first. There are a number of certificate programs on offer through universities and colleges, as well as master’s degree and doctoral degree in conflict or dispute resolution. It is actually very rare for someone to complete a degree specific to conflict resolution, however. Rather, most of them use these programs to further hone their existing skills that they have obtained through work experience and other degree programs. Law, for instance, is very common. A bachelor’s degree in a field that is appropriate to the expertise in which you wish to resolve conflict is usually the minimum requirement. A law degree may be necessary for specific positions, and many businesses now look for those who hold a master’s in business administration.
Training & Certification Requirements
There currently isn’t a national license for conflict resolution professionals, conciliators, mediators, or arbitrators. However, there are certifications for specific types of cases, and some states do require their conflict resolution specialists to hold these certifications if they are to work on a certain kind of state. You may, for instance, have to be a certified public accountant or a licensed attorney in order to represent either of the two parties in a conflict. Hence, don’t forget to look into what the requirements are for your particular situation.
