What We Do

Global psychology is a new and emerging field of psychology, and one that is very interesting. The field tries to study the differences between the psychology of various cultures, and also the effects of global events on the psyche of nations. At present, a strong focus of global psychologists is on the impact of terrorism threats, for instance.

Work Environment

Global psychologists, by and large, are research psychologists. While they may spend lengthy periods of time in laboratories and research centers, they also often engage in field work. They may travel to disaster-stricken countries, for instance, to assist or monitor developments in the psychology of those who have been affected by these disasters. Many also work for volunteer organizations and NGOs, traveling to war torn countries all over the world. The job is not that glamorous, therefore, but it is one of particular importance in today’s tense society.

How to Become a Global Psychology

In order to be able to call yourself a psychologist, most states require that you hold at least a doctoral degree in the subject. This can either be the research based Ph.D. or the clinical based Psy.D. This means that you must first completed a four year bachelor’s degree, which does not have to be in psychology but that is beneficial, followed by a two year graduate degree specifically in global psychology, after which you can enroll in and complete your doctorate degree in global psychology.

Training & Certification Requirements

In most states, psychologists have to have received a license to practice. Exactly which credentials, certifications, or licensures are required vary depending on the state. You can find out what the requirements are for your state through the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards. The American Board of Professional Psychology, meanwhile, awards licenses in 15 different areas of psychology. Global psychology is still an emerging field, however, so certifications are slightly more difficult to find. Licenses must be maintained by demonstrating participation in continuous education credits, or by retaking the examination.
