The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Health Psychology around the country.
What We Do
The field of health psychology looks at what the psychological foundations are for physical illnesses. These include behaviors and the various social, mental, and emotional factors. Sometimes, these can lead to a physical illness, and at other times, they are symptoms of certain diseases. Either way, the focus in health psychology is on how the psychological and the physical aspects interact. Health psychologists do not concern themselves will illnesses. Rather, they study the biopsychological factors that link mental and physical health together. They also look at how health care services are delivered, to improve the overall quality of care.
Work Environment
There are four main branches of health psychology, each of which has a different work environment. These are (1) community health psychology, whereby people work in clinics within communities, organizing activities and outreach programs; (2) public health psychology, whereby people work for state, local, and national governments in order to develop policies for the improvement of overall public health; (3) critical health psychology, which is a sociopolitical element, hence many people work within political organizations, statistical research companies, NGOs, and health care delivery services; (4) clinical health psychology, which combines all the other branches, meaning that psychologists can quite literally work within any kind of organization.
How to Become a Health Psychology
In order to become a health psychologist, you must complete a doctoral degree in this particular field. This means that you start with a four year undergraduate degree, preferably but not mandatory, in psychology, followed by a two year graduate degree in health psychology. After that, you choose the research based Ph.D. or the clinical work based Psy.D. to obtain your doctorate in health psychology, which is usually also where you choose one of the four branches of health psychology.
Training & Certification Requirements
The American Board of Professional Psychology certifies health psychologists. Most states also have licensure options available, although their requirements vary greatly depending on what state you are in. Becoming certified is an excellent career move.
