The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Substance Abuse Psychology around the country.
What We Do
Substance abuse psychologists are not to be confused with substance abuse counselors. Counselors engage in talking therapies with patients and clients in an effort to help them change their ways. Substance abuse psychologists, on the other hand, delve much deeper into this and often perform research on psychological factors that increase chances of substance abuse, as well as look at the psychological effects of substance abuse. Many also focus strongly on dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders, which take place when someone has both a substance abuse and a mental health problem, regardless of which one came first.
Work Environment
Many substance abuse psychologists work within inpatient and outpatient rehab facilities, and particularly in those where treatment is provided for those with a co-occurring disorder. Others work exclusively in research, looking at the impact of substance abuse on the human psyche, and vice verse. Some become teachers, working with academics and preparing the next generation of psychologists. Lastly, some set up private practices to help with the provision of aftercare for those who have gone through rehab.
How to Become a Substance Abuse Psychology
To become a substance abuse psychologist, you must first complete a four year bachelor’s degree. While this does not have to be in psychology, it is often recommended to build up a solid foundation in this particular subject area. After the bachelor’s degree, you must enroll in a two year master’s degree, where you can choose the medical psychology specialization. In order to call yourself a psychologist, you must also complete a doctoral degree, with is either the research based Ph.D., or the clinically based Psy.D.
Training & Certification Requirements
Each state has its own requirements in terms of licenses and certification for substance abuse psychologists. The American Psychological Association and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards both list what the requirements within each state are. Certification is usually valid for a certain period of time only, and must be maintained either through proof of continuous education credits, or by retaking the examination.
