The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Clinical Nurse Specialist around the country.
What We Do
A clinical nurse specialist is a form of advanced practice registered nurse who is responsible for dealing with nursing practices identified by medical specialty, population, and type of care. These health professionals focus on theory and research when formulating diagnoses and promoting wellness for the public, thus providing advanced nursing care according to their chosen specialty. Most of these nurse specialists practice in hospital settings, but clinical nurses can also be found elsewhere.
Work Environment
The majority of clinical nurse specialists can be found working within a hospital, or in a university or research laboratory. However, these health professionals may also find employment within outpatient and corporate settings, as well as community health centers.
How to Become a Clinical Nurse Specialist
Aspiring clinical nurse specialists will need to start their career by first going to nursing school. Because most of the programs for becoming a clinical nurse specialist that are available today require the candidate to first have a bachelor’s degree in nursing, this four-year option is often the best route to take. Once you have completed your bachelor’s degree, you will also be able to enroll in a master’s degree program, which may takes two to three years to complete depending on your chosen specialty.
Training & Certification Requirements
All states throughout the U.S. require their practicing nurses to be appropriately licensed. Clinical nurse specialist (CNS) graduate programs will also require all applicants to be licensed as an RN and have a four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing. Most states will require candidates to pass their national council licensure examination, to become a registered nurse, and some states will have additional requirements for certification. Importantly, your opportunity to earn certification as a CNS will depend on which specialty you choose. Not all specialties have a certification designation available, but there are options for those who practice in orthopedic care, critical care, oncology, adult health, gerontology, home health, psychiatric health, and community health.
