The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Certified Nurse Midwife around the country.
What We Do
A certified nurse midwife is a form of advanced practice nurse who spends his or her time dealing with women’s health issues relating all the way from adolescence to menopause. While most midwives are best known for the assistance that they provide to women during childbirth, most nurse midwives are actually highly experienced in prenatal care, postpartum care, and health for newborn babies. The scope of practice for certified nurse midwives extends to breast and gynecological exams, as well as family planning and sexually transmitted diseases.
Work Environment
Most of the time, certified nurse midwives will find employment within physician practices or hospitals as these environments are where they will often find the highest level of job opportunities. However, some states will allow for certified nurse midwives to build their own independent practices if they have a certain level of experience and the right licensure.
How to Become a Certified Nurse Midwife
To become a certified nurse midwife, you will first need to become a registered nurse. Often, this will involve earning your bachelor’s degree or associates degree in nursing from an accredited college. Most admission boards for higher education will prefer applicants with at least a single year of experience as a registered nurse. Graduates of accredited nursing programs or bachelor’s degree programs will also be able to apply to take the state board examination to earn their license as a registered nurse. The state requirements for this certification will vary, but generally a registered nurse who holds a license in one state can apply for licensure in another by endorsement.
Training & Certification Requirements
Earning certification as a nurse midwife will generally require the completion of a graduate program within the realm of midwifery that has been approved and accredited by the Accreditation Commission or Midwifery Education. Graduate degree programs in midwifery will allow students to advance their skills clinically and academically, and last for two years, in obtaining a master’s degree. What’s more, students who hold registered nurse licenses and have graduated from a nurse-midwifery program will have the opportunity to apply to become certified as a nurse midwife with the credential awarded by the American Midwifery Certification Board. Candidates must pass the exam within 24 months of their midwife degree program.
