Most transplant nurses will hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and many employers will require transplant nurses to hold doctorates or master’s degrees, so it is worth considering to have further education whenever possible. During schooling, you should attempt to focus your studies on training in medical surgical nursing, and transplant nursing, as well as taking courses in intensive or critical care.
Training & Certification Requirements
Transplant nurses will need to start their career path as a registered nurse after completing a college diploma, four-year’s bachelor of science degree, or two-year associate degree. Following this time, students will need to obtain some clinical work experience and pass their national licensing examination for registered nurses. This is necessary for all registered nurses in the United States. During their studies, nurses who wish to get into the transplant field will need to gain experience in the surgical and critical care unit. Transplant nurses need to pass the transplant nurse certification examination, which can be offered by the American Board for Transplant Certification.
