The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Clinical Psychology around the country.
What We Do
Clinical psychologists are highly educated individuals who use their training, knowledge, and experience to diagnose and treat people with mental health conditions or illnesses. These mental health conditions or illnesses can range from grief to schizophrenia. Psychologists are not psychiatrists, however, who can prescribe medication. Rather, they offer treatment through psychotherapy. Many clinical psychologists have a specialization in a certain area of mental health, or in a certain demographic of patients.
Work Environment
Clinical psychologists can work in a variety of different settings. They are commonly found in hospitals, particularly mental health wards, but they can also be employed in various businesses, or have their own private practice.
How to Become a Clinical Psychology
The journey towards becoming a clinical psychologist is very lengthy. In most states, they must first complete a doctorate degree, which means starting with a bachelor’s degree, followed by a master’s degree, and finally the doctorate degree. Besides these, they must also complete an internship and, finally, work under supervision for a set number of years. After that, they can take the licensure examination that has been set by their state.
Training & Certification Requirements
Clinical psychologists are board certified in their own state. They will have a certification for general clinical psychology, but usually also for their chosen specialization. Common specializations include clinical neuropsychology and clinical health psychology. Each state has set its own requirements to determine whether or not someone is able to get certified. These requirements are listed with organizations such as the American Psychological Association and the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Clinical Psychology Job Outlook
The job outlook for clinical psychologists is very good. The BLS has reported a 19% expected growth in demand for this profession between 2014 and 2024. There are two main reasons for this significant growth. The first is that existing psychologists are retiring and, due to the lengthy training period, they are not being replaced quickly enough. The second reason is that the stigma on mental health is being lifted, which means people are more willing to seek help for issues such as depression, mental health problems, relationship issues, addiction, and so on. The greatest demand is for psychologist with the highest amount of experience, which means most engage in lengthier internships first.
