What We Do
Human services professionals are individuals that work in a range of diverse fields, all focused on improving the quality of life for the communities and individuals that they serve. According to the National Organization for Human Services, these professionals are usually working within the direction of others, and also work directly alongside the population that they are serving, dealing with social workers, psychologists, and other professionals in private and government-run settings.
Work Environment
As a human services professional, you may find yourself working for a range of organizations, including rehabilitation centers, housing associations, residential care homes, food banks, and mental health facilities. In order to become a specialist in human services, however, you will first need to complete a number of competency requirements.
How to Become a Human Services
People with an aspiration for becoming a human services professional will need to begin by earning their high school diploma. Most human services professionals, however, have also completed associate’s degrees in specialty areas and human services, such as addiction studies or gerontology. Some service professionals will also hold bachelor’s degrees within a range of related fields, including psychology and social work. Requirements regarding education will vary according to each employer, and human service professionals can expect to complete a range of on-going seminars and classes during the course of their career.
Training & Certification Requirements
Human services professionals will need to secure a license before they join any specific practice. While the certification and licensing requirements for these professionals may vary according to state, most will be required to have a degree in a human services field from an institution that is accredited and recognized. You may also be required to pass a range of criminal background checks. Those who are seeking licenses will often have to submit applications to their state’s licensing agency and sit for an examination, which tests their knowledge in the realm of human services.
