The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Mental Health Counseling around the country.
What We Do
Mental health counselors are professionals that have been fully trained in the use of a number of therapies, and how those therapies can be used to assist clients with mental and emotional health issues. As a mental health counselor, chances are that you will find yourself working in a variety of environments, helping patients to overcome educational, vocational, spiritual, emotional, and marital issues, from depression and stress, to grief and panic. You may find that you will be counseling patients on an individual basis, or in group sessions, and will often work closely with other professionals in mental health positions.
Work Environment
Mental health counselors will work in any environment that requires the use of mental health professionals, including social care systems, psychiatrist offices, and hospitals in some cases. Some of these professionals will also offer assistance in clinics and in care facilities.
How to Become a Mental Health Counseling
To become a licensed mental health counselor, you will need to begin by earning your master’s degree. Schools offer a range of master’s degree solutions in counseling and related mental health fields such as psychology. The requirements for admission into a master’s level program will include a bachelor’s degree and a certain minimum score on your GRE.
Training & Certification Requirements
For mental health counselors, you will find that becoming licensed typically means that you can practice on an independent level, without any supervision. While licensure requirements will vary according to state, most of the time licensure acts as a way of demonstrating that mental health counselors have met a minimum mental health professional standard. Licensed counselors need to possess master’s degrees, have at least two years of clinical experience, and will have passed licensing exams. Certification can be a voluntary extra for mental health counselors, but it often benefits their careers. According to the National Board for Certified Counselors, there are a number of certification options available, including the baseline designation, which is the national certified counselor (NCC). Those who have already earned their NCC credential may choose to go further with their education and earn the certification of certified clinical mental health counselor. For this, applicants will need to pass the national clinical mental health counselor examination and have a certain number of hours of experience.
