The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Health Aide around the country.
What We Do
Home health aides are professionals who visit a client or patient’s home, or work within residential or care home facilities in order to provide around-the-clock, or regular care to the elderly, disabled, or sick. Home health aides will often work with patients who need more extensive care from a medical or physical level than a family might be capable of offering.
Work Environment
Typically, home health aides work for private or government-funded companies that allow them to go out and visit clients within their own homes. In some situations, however, a health aide will work within a care home, rehabilitation center, or residential home.
How to Become a Health Aide
In order to become a health aide, there is no actual formal education requirement in place. However, that being said, most health aides will possess a high school diploma. Aides who choose to work within certified hospice agencies or home health agencies will be asked to complete formal training and will often need to pass a standardized test that includes some form of hands-on demonstration to show their competency in the presence of a registered nurse. Sometimes, community colleges may offer preparatory classes for health aides, and vocational or technical schools might provide classes to help them meet the educational requirements in place before they are allowed to work independently with clients.
Training & Certification Requirements
When it comes to formal training, prospective health aide candidates may choose to participate in programs offered by community colleges and other education institutions. These programs often do not last long, however applicants may be asked to complete physical examinations, as well as background checks to ensure that they can work with clients. Some home health aide candidates might choose to consider the National Association for Home Care and Hospice certification for their career. In order to earn their credentials in this particular area, applicants will be required to complete at least seventy-five hours of training, as well as demonstrating their skills through a written examination. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that in some states, candidates may be asked to complete additional requirements before obtaining certification.
