The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Health Information Management around the country.
What We Do
Patient records for hospitals, physician offices, and clinics are becoming more and more digital by the day, as people rely on having efficient and easy ways to store information about clients in a way that is approved by the government and allows for privacy and protection throughout an organization. Since we are relying more than ever on technology for information storage and retrieval, it only makes sense that we would turn to health information management specialists for help dealing with that technology.
Work Environment
Health information management professionals work in a range of different healthcare locations, including in their own private offices, as well as government organizations, public organizations, nursing care facilities, specialist healthcare providers, physician offices, and clinics or hospitals.
How to Become a Health Information Manager
Health information management (HIM) is all about recording, organizing and storing patient data in a way that makes it easy for medical staff to access, interpret and use when working with patients. We’re talking about a patient’s complete medical history, which could include everything from diagnostic images and test results from years past, to the latest prescription the patient started taking last week. This means health information managers are experts in the use of the latest information management technology and software, and have a mind for the extremely detail-oriented work required to ensure electronic health records (EHRs) are complete and accurate down to the last letter. Today, an additional and very important element to the work health information managers do is securing electronic records against potential cyber intrusions.
Health information technicians can find work with an associate’s degree and a post-degree certificate in HIM or an associate’s in health information management specifically. Higher level managerial roles, however, more often require a bachelor’s degree or higher, either in health information management specifically, or in a healthcare discipline like nursing along with a CAHIIM-accredited post-degree certificate. CAHIIM (Commission for Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education) is the ultimate authority when it comes to verifying the quality and completeness of degree and certificate programs in health information management, so it’s smart to make sure any program you might be considering has the CAHIIM stamp of approval.
Training & Certification Requirements
Individuals who manage to successfully complete a relevant and accredited bachelor’s degree or associates degree in regards to health information management accredited by CAHIIM will be qualified to take a credentialing exam which will allow them to designate themselves as a registered health information technician. In order to earn the RHIT credential, you will need to have plenty of experience, and be able to pay any associated fees. This credential can provide further opportunities for career advancement and higher paid jobs.
