The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Biostatistics around the country.
What We Do
Biostatisticians are academic professionals within the field of biomedical research. They are responsible for analyzing the effects of environmental conditions, treatments, and other factors on living things. These professionals might work on healthcare topics within the private or public sector, and this may include performing research for government agencies, or setting statistical parameters for new studies within a pharmaceutical company. Work can often take place within an office setting, or extend out into the field.
Work Environment
Most biostatisticians work within government agencies, educational institutions, or in pharmaceutical companies. These professionals spend the largest portion of their workdays within an office setting, typically with a computer. These professionals often need to become familiar with specialized programs that are used to analyze statistics, and so they spend a lot of time in the lab, but they are also required to work alongside other professionals in the field, meaning that they might interact in universities and government areas.
How to Become a Biostatistics
Becoming a biostatistician requires at least a bachelor’s degree. It is possible to earn a position as a biostatical expert with only a bachelor’s degree within your relevant field of study, but most experts agree that advanced work within this area generally requires a doctor of philosophy or master of science degree in statistics, mathematics, or biostatistics ideally. Aspiring individuals who attend schools that don’t offer undergraduate degrees in biostatistics might be able to achieve a job simply by getting their bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics, or statistics.
Training & Certification Requirements
As mentioned above, while there are some entry-level positions that may be available to people who hold bachelor’s degree, the largest portion of biostatisticians go on to achieve their doctorates or master’s degrees. These degrees will assist students in becoming specialized in their chosen field, and will also give them further experience in conducting research and presenting results. PhD and M.S. curricula generally offer a range of more advanced courses which will teach students how to complete biomedical studies. What’s more, students may also learn new methods of tracking down relevant information.
