The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Community Health around the country.
What We Do
A community health nurse is a registered nurse who has decided he or she wants to have a more significant impact on health within their chosen community. This can mean working with patients who don’t have health insurance, or experience lower income. Community nurses are responsible for educating their community on matters like health promotion, as well as directing public health screenings, offering counseling services, and running blood drives. Some community health nurses will focus on a particular healthcare aspect, like mental health or HIV treatment.
Work Environment
Similarly to other nurses, community health nurses are often found working within trauma centers, hospitals, and clinics, alongside government agencies and non-profit organizations. Community health nurses may also work in research facilities and health centers, or travel around for work, visiting different communities or different parts of a community.
How to Become a Community Health
In order to become a community health nurse, you will need to begin by becoming a registered nurse. This will mean earning your associates degree in nursing, or a bachelor of science degree in nursing – which often provides a higher range of career opportunities. Once you have accomplished earning your nursing degree, you will be able to sit to pass the national licensure examination for registered nurses – the exam that all nurses must pass to legally practice within their chosen state.
Training & Certification Requirements
Importantly, registered nurses will be able to work as community nurses without earning their graduate degree, but it’s crucial for nurses to investigate the organization or prospective employer they’re interested in for requirements regarding community nurse hiring. On the other hand, if you want to specialize in your field of nursing, then you could earn the master in public health or master of science in nursing degree. The American Nurses Credentialing Center allows advanced public health nurses to get their Advanced Public Health Nurse Board Certified designation. Only registered nurses who have a license and a graduate degree will be able to obtain certification.
