The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Epidemiology around the country.
What We Do
Epidemiologists are healthcare professionals who are responsible for investigating, tracking, discovering, and evaluating national, local, or international surges in illness or disease. These science-based healthcare professionals are often associated with studying infectious disease, though they also get involved with other public health issues, such as studying chronic disease, substance abuse, and maternal health. These healthcare experts regularly conduct surveys and analyze fluids within the body to determine illness or disease outbreak patterns, and they can strive to control the spread of disease or prevent further outbreaks through public health programs.
Work Environment
Many professional epidemiologists will work within private and public health institutions across the country. However, some will work within laboratory settings, for government agencies, or within sections of universities or pharmaceutical businesses. It is important to note that in all environments, safety precautions must be followed very carefully when dealing with infectious and potentially deadly diseases.
How to Become an Epidemiology
In order to become an epidemiologist, you must first earn your bachelor’s degree. While no specific major will be required, most individuals find that undergraduate coursework that includes at least a single class in chemistry, biology, health science, calculus, social science and behavioral science is particularly useful in this career. A master’s degree in epidemiology or masters’ degree public health is also regarded to be the minimum educational requirement for those who want to obtain a career in this subject. The curricula for this course generally draw from a range of disciplines and cover research into the methodology, clinical trial design and more.
Training & Certification Requirements
Sometimes, epidemiology professionals find that they will be required to obtain their Ph.D. if they want any chance of advancing their career. This might include obtaining university teaching jobs. Students within a Ph.D. system will be expected to focus on an epidemiology specialty, such as nutritional, chronic disease, or molecular epidemiology. However, it’s worth noting that the curricular are often flexible in meeting the personal interests of each student. All students at the doctoral level must complete an independent research option and write a dissertation.
