What We Do
A healthcare analytics professional deals with the various numbers and figures related to the field of medicine. These individuals focus on improving operational efficiency in a variety of different fields. A healthcare analytics professional uses computers to look at information from hospital inventories, patient records, insurance and billing records, and more. They look for patterns and trends in how different departments perform. They also identify problem areas, like accuracy and duplication of cost figures. From the data that they capture and report on, they create databases in order to create performance reports, but also to make projections. The goal is to always improve the administration’s effectiveness and efficiency, thereby ensuring healthcare providers are able to deliver the best possible services to both patients and insurance. Healthcare analytics professionals also often engage in staff training and development, usually as a result of the data that they gather.
Work Environment
Healthcare analytics professionals or healthcare analysts usually work in hospitals and large medical settings. These include in areas such as claims processing, supply dispersal, and quality of treatment.
How to Become a Healthcare Analytics
To become a healthcare analytics professional or healthcare analyst, you will need to hold at least a bachelor’s degree, usually with relevant subjects such as business. This will enable you to obtain an entry level position. However, healthcare analysts work closely together with manipulating and managing figures, which means that you deal with sensitive and complex data. As a result, most healthcare settings now prefer to hire applicants who have a master’s degree in a relevant field. The curriculum should at the very least include basic computer science, statistics, and mathematics. Most employers now look for those with a graduate degree in computer science, nursing, public health, health informatics, public policy, or biostatistics.
Training & Certification Requirements
There is no requirement for someone to obtain additional certification to become a healthcare analyst. However, someone who becomes a Certified Health Data Analyst tends to be in the greatest demand. This certification can be obtained through the American Health Information Management Association.
