What We Do
Occupational safety specialists or occupational health and safety experts are professionals who work to decrease the risk of any kind of injury or harm that might befall people in the workplace. These individuals often examine a variety of different work environments and make sure that all safety regulations are followed. Because these professionals are responsible for testing the safety of a number of work environments, they can sometimes be placed in dangerous situations and work extra hours.
Work Environment
An occupational safety specialist can generally find employment within a range of different industries, including hospitals, manufacturing facilities, state and federal governments, and in local governments too. These professionals have the opportunity to pursue a range of different job titles, including industrial hygienist, health physicist, and even an environmental protection officer.
How to Become a Occupational Safety
Those who have an interest in pursuing careers as occupational safety and health specialists will need to earn their bachelor’s degrees in health and safety at an occupational level, or obtain a degree in a related field of science. Bachelor’s degree programs will often instruct students about the professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities of occupational specialists in the workplace, and coursework will include an evaluation of health and safety standards, hazard identification, and more. A large amount of on-the-job training might be required for these individuals to learn the various laws and inspection procedures applicable to their work environments. Since these professionals can work in various different settings, the type of training they receive will depend on the environment that they work in.
Training & Certification Requirements
While getting a certification will sometimes be voluntary for occupational safety specialists, it’s worth noting that most employers will prefer to choose candidates who have obtained certification. It is possible to become certified through organizations like the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, where professionals can also become a certified industrial hygienist. Alternatively, you can get your certification through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, where you get a credential as a certified safety professional after meeting requirements regarding coursework, education, and years of experience.
