The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Behavioral Health Technician around the country.
What We Do
A behavioral health technician is responsible for working with patients who have mental illnesses and/or developmental disabilities. They perform a range of duties, including conducting recreational and therapeutic activities, administering medication, and monitoring vital signs. They usually work under the supervision of mental health nurses and psychiatrists.
Work Environment
Most behavioral health technicians are found on the mental health wards of private, local, and state hospitals. They may also be employed in specialized mental health institutions, or for nonprofit and charitable organizations.
How to Become a Behavioral Health Technician
The American Association of Psychiatric Technicians (AAPT) has reported that the role of behavioral health technician is an entry level role, and no formal education beyond high school is required. That said, employers are looking at improving the standard of mental health care and are therefore looking for those who have at least an associate’s degree or even a bachelor’s degree. Indeed, some 36% of these technicians now have a bachelor’s degree, whereas 34% have a GED or high school diploma.
Training & Certification Requirements
There are no formal certification or licensing requirements for behavioral health technicians. However, the AAPT does offer the Nationally Certified Psychiatric Technician certification, which demonstrates to employers that you are committed to professionalism. In addition, it should be noted that in some states, having this certification is now a requirement, and other states might follow. There are also four levels of certification available, depending on how much education you have completed. The bottom tier is for those fresh out of high school, whereas the top tier is for those who hold a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of relevant work experience. Some states also have their own voluntary certification options available to certify behavioral health technicians.
