The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Dental Hygienist around the country.
What We Do
Dental hygienists are individuals with expertise in oral health who generally work within the supervision of a licensed dentist. Alongside teaching patients proper hygiene techniques for oral health, these individuals conduct patient assessments, teeth cleanings, and oral inspections. Dental hygienists must take precautions in avoiding the spread of disease, and often spend many hours standing or leaning over patients.
Work Environment
Dental hygienists can generally find work anywhere they might find a dentist. In other words, this means that they could find a career in general or specialty dental clinics, as well as in nursing homes, hospitals, and various other healthcare facilities.
How to Become a Dental Hygienist
The typical educational degree level that is required for a dental hygienist is an associate degree. However, many people may consider completing bachelor’s or master’s level degree if they are interested in advancing their careers. Programs generally focus on teaching individuals how to use dental tools and software, and courses may include various options for specialization in dental materials, radiology, and infection control. Dental hygienists need to develop solid interpersonal skills, and work with patients on a daily basis, often with a need to explain dental procedures.
Training & Certification Requirements
Dental hygienists from any state must always earn their license. The eligibility requirements for licensure may vary, but nearly every state will call for applicants to hold at least postsecondary credentials from an accredited dental hygiene program. Other requirements may include school transcripts, CPR certification, and letters of recommendation. Qualified candidates will sit for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination, which a test that is administered by the American Dental Association. While an associate’s degree is enough for most dental hygiene positions, some dental hygienists can earn higher degrees to earn higher careers. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in dental hygiene might qualify individuals for careers that extend beyond the dental office, such as in research and teaching. Some advanced degrees are also necessary for certain positions.
