What We Do
A diagnostic medical sonographer works with highly specialized imaging equipment in order to conduct tests and obtain images. The results of these tests and images are used by physicians in order to assess and diagnose patients as to their medical conditions. Sometimes, they will work together with physicians during surgery.
Work Environment
Diagnostic medical sonographers are found mainly in private, local, and state hospitals. Around 70% of these professionals are found there. Others work in physician’s offices. Lastly, some are found in diagnostic and medical laboratories.
How to Become a Diagnostic Medical Sonography
There are associate’s degrees and bachelor’s degrees available in sonography. Some hospitals and colleges also offer one year certification programs. You should choose a program that has been accredited by the Comission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), as this demonstrates educational excellence. You will have to complete both classroom instruction and practical instruction, working under supervision of experienced sonographers and physicians.
Training & Certification Requirements
While professional certification is not always required by law, it is often preferred. This is because it demonstrates a commitment to professional excellence, and also because most insurance providers will only pay if a procedure has been completed by a certified sonographer. Certification can be obtained through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. To become certified, you need to graduate from a program that is CAAHEP accredited. In addition, you will then have to choose a certification specific to your personal interest, which usually focuses on a certain area of the body. That said, many diagnostic medical sonographers have multiple certifications. It is also recommended to complete the Basic Life Support certification, which demonstrates that you are able to perform CPR. There are also a number of states that do require licensing for diagnostic medical sonographers. To become licensed, you must first have been certified. Exactly what the requirements are will depend on the state. As a result, you should contact your state medical board in order to find out the exact rules.
