The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for EEG Technician around the country.
What We Do
An EEG technician helps doctors to get information about their patients’ brain activity. Mainly, they administer the electroencephalogram (EEG) test, which means that they place electrodes on the scalp of the patient, which then record the stimuli and measure the response of the brain. This can be done while the patient is active, and also during surgery that requires the activity of the brain and nervous system to be monitored. Physicians use EEG reports in order to diagnose whether someone has a medical condition like epilepsy, or whether brain damage has occurred as a result of trauma. In addition, EEGs can help determine whether a coma patient is starting to recover.
Work Environment
EEG technicians mainly work within local, state, and private hospitals. They may also be found in ambulatory services to provide emergency testing. In some rare instances, they may also be employed in physicians’ offices.
How to Become a EEG Technician
An EEG technician should hold an associate’s degree as a minimum. Some 68% of current EEG technicians have this degree, while only 6% have a high school diploma and no further education. The most relevant program is the Associate of Applied Science in Electroneurodiagnostic Technology. Some, however, choose to complete the certificate and train on the job. These programs include courses in areas such as performing EEGs, medical terminology, healthcare systems, physiology, and human anatomy. Additionally, there is usually an element of clinical experience involved as well.
Training & Certification Requirements
There is no legal requirement for EEG technicians to be certified or licensed. However, the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists do have certification available. Eligible candidates must hold an associate’s degree in the field, have completed a full year of clinical practice, and must hold a current and valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification. The latter can be obtained through the American Red Cross or through the American Heart Association.
