The role is both clerical and clinical in nature, and you will be utilized as and when needed. You may have to take blood pressure, body temperature, and other vital signs, liaise with the lab for specimens, treat wounds, place casts, and more. You may also have administrative responsibilities, however, including assisting patients when they are admitted or discharged, helping with the discharge and transfer of patients, keeping the working environment safe and clean, keeping track of patient charts and information, and ensuring that various kinds of supplies are replenished when needed.
Work Environment
Most emergency room technicians work in hospitals, in the emergency room itself. They may also be found in ambulance stations, and anywhere where emergency medical care may be needed.
How to Become a Emergency Room Technician
Generally speaking, only a high school diploma or GED is required. However, with the commitment to improve the overall skills of the health care workforce, most employers now look for someone who is certified. Most employers will require an applicant to show a post-secondary certificate. However, most employers require completion of a certified nurse assistant (CNA) or emergency medical technician (EMT) program or course and at least six months to one year of relevant work experience. Additionally, you must have a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification, and depending on your training, either EMT licensure or CNA certification. Several community colleges and technical schools offer EMT, CNA or emergency room technician programs that typically combine classroom learning and clinical training. Common course topics include medical terminology, reading EKGs, inserting IVs and phlebotomy.
Training & Certification Requirements
The certification that is generally required for emergency room technicians is the CNA or the EMT program, and they also look for those who have at least one year of experience. This certification is voluntary, but those who hold it tend to have much better job prospects.
