What We Do
Hospital administrators work to ensure that hospitals are able to deliver high quality healthcare to patients in an efficient manner. These administrators are responsible for managing budgets, finances, worker schedules, records, and regulations. In some smaller hospitals, administrators may be responsible for watching over the entire facility, whereas in larger institutions, administrators are hired to manage single departments.
Work Environment
Typically, as the name would suggest, a hospital administrator might work within a hospital environment. However, these professionals can also find employment in healthcare facilities, clinics, and doctor’s offices.
How to Become a Hospital Administration
The minimum educational requirement for hospital administrators is a bachelor’s degree within a relevant field. A graduate may begin his or her career with an entry-level position in their chosen field by accessing a bachelor’s degree. Graduates who hold a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration may also continue their studies in a master’s level program. Employers of most hospital administrators will generally prefer candidates who obtain a graduate degree in healthcare administration. Many universities and colleges offering a master’s degree in hospital administration will require students to submit some evidence of their experience working in the healthcare industry.
Training & Certification Requirements
The American College for Healthcare Executives (ACHE) recommends that students complete a post-graduate administrative fellowship when taking a master’s degree program in healthcare administration. These programs are designed to offer students an insight into the world of hospital administration on a deeper level once they have successfully completed their master’s degree. The purpose of a post-graduate fellowship will be to help you transition into the management of various healthcare organizations. There is certification available for hospital administrators, which is offered by the ACHE. They provide the ACHE fellow designation to signify that you have achieved a high level of experience, expertise and commitment in your chosen profession of healthcare management. Board certification will require you to submit an application and pass a board of governor’s exam.
