What We Do
Medical assistants generally spend their time working in healthcare clinics and physicians’ offices, performing a number of routine tasks that are designed to support nurses and doctors, and ensure that the practice’s operations continue to run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Many medical assistants will find themselves responsible for a range of administrative duties, including filing medical records, scheduling appointments, and arranging hospital procedures.
Work Environment
In many situations, medical assistants will often work in healthcare clinics and in physician’s offices, but they can also work in private healthcare offices, hospitals, and even in care facilities. The options for medical assistants are quite extensive, embracing practically all of the areas of health care.
How to Become a Medical Assisting
In order to become a medical assistant, individuals must first prove that they can make the right impressions on patients, as they are often the first and last people a patient will deal with. This means that you will need to build up incredible interpersonal skills, and ensure that you have a good ability to communicate with colleagues and patients alike. Usually, accredited medical assistance degree programs will include a range of coursework topics designed to give essential knowledge in areas like medical terminology, insurance procedures, human anatomy and pharmacology. Those who pursue single-year certifications will need to ensure that their knowledge on such topics is equally comprehensive.
Training & Certification Requirements
According to information given by the American Association of Medical Assistants, or the AAMA, most aspiring medical assistants will need to graduate from a two-year associate degree program on medical assistance and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. These graduates should be qualified to take an AAMA certification exam which will define them as a certified medial assistant, and the certification must then be renewed every five years. This course can open up a wide range of options for future advancement too.
