The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Occupational Therapy around the country.
What We Do
An occupational therapist is responsible for the treatment of disabled, ill, or injured people, enabling them to engage in everyday activities. They focus on development, recovery, and improvement of skills. They also work with those with permanent disabilities, educating them on adaptive equipment to improve overall quality of life and independence.
Work Environment
Occupational therapists can work in a variety of settings. They are found in educational facilities to work with children, in the homes of elderly and disabled people, in elderly living facilities, in employment facilities to create functional work spaces, in mental health clinics to work with those with developmental disabilities, and in hospitals.
How to Become a Occupational Therapy
To become an occupational therapist, a master’s degree in occupational therapy is generally required. There is a vast array of programs to choose from in this country, all of which are accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education. To be admitted into these programs, a completed bachelor’s degree is generally required, with courses in physiology and biology. Additionally, applicants must have gained some work experience, voluntary or paid, in occupational therapy settings. It generally takes between two and three years to complete a master’s degree, and some go on to a doctoral, which takes another three. There are dual degrees where a student can complete both a bachelor’s and master’s in just five years. All graduate and post graduate programs require students to complete a minimum of 24 weeks supervised fieldwork. This is also an opportunity to gain relevant work experience in a clinical setting.
Training & Certification Requirements
In all states, occupational therapists have to be licensed to practice. The requirements vary between states, but all must pass the NBCOT (National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy) examination. To be allowed to take this exam, students must hold a graduate degree from an accredited program, as well as having completed the necessary fieldwork experience. Once passed, occupational therapists can call themselves OTR (Occupational Therapist, Registered). To maintain this, they have to prove continuous education. There are also some specialty certifications available through the American Occupational Therapy Association. This focuses on specific areas of practice.
