What We Do
A phlebotomy technician, or phlebotomist, is responsible for collecting patients’ blood samples. These samples must then be properly labeled. These professionals are also responsible for the maintenance and assembly of equipment used to draw blood. This is done for testing, research, transfusions, and donations. Phlebotomy technicians have a lot of direct contact with patients, which means they also have to have good interpersonal skills. Additionally, they must be able to handle possible adverse reactions in people when they need to have blood drawn from them.
Work Environment
Phlebotomy technicians can work in a variety of medical settings. Most of them work within private, local, and state hospitals, followed by diagnostic and medical laboratories. In addition, they can also be found in various ambulatory services, as well as in the offices of physicians.
How to Become a Phlebotomy Technician
Generally, a phlebotomy technician is trained through a phlebotomy program, which is a non-degree, post-secondary program. These are offered in technical schools, vocational schools, and community colleges. Usually, it takes less than a year to complete the program, and students are awarded a diploma or certificate. The program includes both classroom education as well as some practical work experience. The usual subjects include medical terminology, physiology, and anatomy. These students will also be taught about tracking, labeling, and identifying samples. It is also possible to be trained on the job to become a phlebotomist.
Training & Certification Requirements
There are currently three states that require a certification for phlebotomy. Nevertheless, even in the states where certification is not required, it is generally appreciated as it demonstrates knowledge and professionalism in the holder of the certification. The phlebotomy technician certification is offered by the American Medical Technologists (AMT), the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ACSP), the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), and the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
