What We Do
Radiation therapists are responsible for using equipment for providing radiation treatment to patients who suffer from diseases that respond well to this kind of treatment, such as cancer patients. These professionals are also required to ensure that the equipment are properly maintained, while making sure that safety procedures are correctly followed, and patients are monitored during their treatment for proper record-keeping practices.
Work Environment
Radiation therapy technicians can work within a range of different medical settings. Basically, these professionals can obtain employment in those places where radiation equipment are used, from care homes and rehabilitation centers, to hospitals and other medical environments.
How to Become a Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapists usually have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree with radiation therapy as focus. A CPR certification is often a prerequisite for admission to these programs. Graduates will then need to pass their state licensure exam for radiation therapists, and they may also need to become certified. Radiation therapy programs are offered in a range of educational environments today, in the form of certificates, bachelors and associates degrees. The length and complexity of the program will vary according to the level of study. Alongside lab studies and coursework, students will often need to complete some clinical education within affiliated medical sites in their local area.
Training & Certification Requirements
In most states, rather than simply earning their certification and entering basic radiation therapy positions, these professionals will be required to earn a licensure before they are permitted to work in this role. The requirements that are in place to allow an individual to obtain licensure will vary according to state, but most will require candidates to pass an exam given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. What’s more, these professionals will be required to obtain certification in many states, and this may be a requirement for employment. Certification can be accessed through the completion of an accredited program and passing an exam, which includes a written and practical skills tests. Radiation therapists must also engage in ongoing education to renew their certification.
