The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Respiratory Technician around the country.
What We Do
Obviously, a respiratory technician helps to look after patients with breathing difficulties. Some of these patients have chronic illnesses, such as emphysema or asthma. Others are premature babies whose lungs have not yet fully developed, or they may be elderly people with diseased pulmonary systems. They also work in emergency care, dealing with patients suffered from shock, drowning, or heart attack.
Work Environment
About 90% of all respiratory technicians work in state, private, or local hospitals. Some can be found in physicians’ offices, or in nursing care facilities. The job is physically demanding, with them spending most of their time on their feet and often having to lift both patients and heavy equipment. These technicians usually work closely with medical assistants, surgeons, physicians, and registered nurses.
How to Become a Respiratory Technician
An associate’s degree is the minimum requirement to be able to work as a respiratory technician. However, a bachelor’s degree is becoming more common as well. Training can be completed at a range of different institutions, but only those that have been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care can become licensed. During a respiratory technician’s training, candidates will usually take courses in math, pharmacology, microbiology, physics, chemistry, and physiology. They often also learn about various types of tests and diagnostics procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, patient assessment, equipment, and more. The courses are delivered partially through classroom instruction, as well as through clinical experience.
Training & Certification Requirements
With the exception of Alaska, all states require licensure for respiratory technicians, but their exact requirements vary. Usually, prospective technicians must pass a certification examination, and this certificate must then be maintained through continuous education or by retaking the exam. The certifying body is the National Board for Respiratory Care, which offers both the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) certification levels. The CRT is the first certification and can be completed after a bachelor’s degree. The RRT, however, is only available for those who have already completed the RRT.
