The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Speech Therapy around the country.
What We Do
Speech therapists, who are also known widely as speech-language pathologists, are professional individuals who work to diagnose and treat disorders that impact the patient’s way of speaking. These disorders might include conditions that prevent the proper development of speech-related sounds, or create rhythm or fluency problems. On the other hand, these might also involve issues with swallowing, or affect a person’s ability to process speech properly.
Work Environment
Speech therapists generally work most often within a clinical setting, but they do have a range of different opportunities available to them. For instance, they might work within a medical facility, school, or within a developmental or research lab. Some of these professionals even visit clients within their homes, and others work on a contract basis, spending a great deal of their time traveling from one location to another.
How to Become a Speech Therapy
The minimum education required to have a career as a speech therapist is a master’s degree. This means that you will need to earn your bachelor’s degree, before moving on to earn a master’s degree in a field that is related to science, health, or speech. One important thing to remember is that all speech therapists, beyond simply obtaining their master’s certification will need to be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills, patience, compassion, and more. They also need to possess excellent listening, speaking, and writing skills, and must regularly upgrade their knowledge in medical software and spreadsheet programs.
Training & Certification Requirements
Beyond a master’s degree, speech therapists can earn their certification through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). This group offers credentialing options for speech therapists through academic programs, continuing education, clinical practice, and clinical specialty recognition. The ASHA certificate for clinical competence in speech-language pathology will satisfy all or part of the licensure requirements in most states, and some of the employers throughout the US will require them to obtain this credential. Alternatively, individuals who graduate with a degree with a major emphasis on language and speech pathology may choose to obtain the Council for Clinical Certification competency certificate for speech-language pathology and audiology. Speech therapists also need to earn a license in order to practice. To get this license, they will need to complete a number of supervised practical clinic hours and earn their master’s degree, as well as passing an exam.
