What We Do
Sterile processing technicians are responsible for the sterilization and assembly of the equipment that physicians and nurses uses during medical procedures, including examinations and surgery. Additionally, they keep track of inventory and order new equipment as and when required. They may also be known as sterile processing and distribution technicians.
Work Environment
A sterile processing technician can be found in any setting that uses medical equipment. These include doctors’ offices, clinics, and hospitals, be they private, local, or state owned.
How to Become a Sterile Processing Technician
Sterile processing and distribution technicians usually have a high school diploma or GED. They will also have been to vocational schools, where they may have completed a sterile processing and distribution course. It usually takes a few weeks to complete these programs, which include courses on medical vocabulary, anatomy, disease control, microbiology, using sterilizing equipment, and development of interpersonal skills.
Training & Certification Requirements
There is no legal requirement to complete a certification in sterile processing and distribution, but it is recommended to improve career prospects. There are two national examinations that those who are aiming to become sterile processing and distribution technicians can choose to take. These are firstly the Certified Registered Central Service Technician offered by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management, and, secondly, the Certified Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution certificate in sterile processing and distribution.
