What We Do
A surgical technologist, or operating room technician, helps during surgery. What they do is set up the operating room and put the necessary equipment in place, as well as help the doctor during procedures. They are a part of an integrated health care team made up of nurses, surgeons, physicians, and other workers. Before a surgical operation can take place, surgical technologists must ensure that the operating room is properly prepared. They then have to prepare the patient themselves, who usually has to be washed. Incision sites have to disinfected, and patients have to be wheeled to the operating room, moved to the table, covered with drapes, and more. Additionally, during surgery, medications and sterile solutions have to be prepared, and surgical technologists also have to check all the equipment. Lastly, they may assist the team with putting on their gloves and gowns. During the operation itself, they play an equally vital role. They pass supplies and instruments to first assistants and surgeons, hold retractors to keep internal organs in position, and set up robotic equipment when needed. They may also have to ensure that samples are properly analyzed. Then, after the operation, the surgical technologist is responsible for applying dressings and bandages to the site of incision. After that, they transfer the patient back to recovery.
Work Environment
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were some 99,800 surgical technologists employed in 2014. Some 70% of those work in hospitals. Others are found in physicians’ offices if outpatient surgery is performed, or in outpatient care centers.
How to Become a Surgical Technology
To become a surgical technologist, you have to complete some post-secondary education. You can go to vocational schools or community colleges for that, or enroll in a university or hospital program. Your field of study should be surgical technology. These programs can last anything from a few months up to two years, granting students with an associate’s degree, diploma, or certificate.
Training & Certification Requirements
Certification is not a legal requirement for a surgical technologist, but it does make the person more employable. Additionally, there are some states where the field is regulated.
