The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Veterinarian Assistant around the country.
What We Do
A veterinary assistant is a professional that helps a veterinarian to provide health and medical care for animals. The duties of these professionals involve taking blood samples and administering medication to animals in care, as well as providing help during procedures and examinations. Some veterinary assistants will also take x-rays, help to hold animals still through treatment, administer tests, and monitor the responses of animals to certain treatments.
Work Environment
Veterinary assistants can basically find employment anywhere where you might find a trained and licensed veterinarian. This means that job opportunities could be available in everything from private veterinary clinics to non-profit organizations and wild-life refuges.
How to Become a Veterinarian Assistant
There are a range of educational routes available to those who want to become a veterinarian assistant. Usually, degree programs in this field can be supplemented by training that is provided on the job by an internship. Community colleges can offer veterinarian assistant programs that have been accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Usually, these programs last for two years. On the other hand, four-year bachelor of science programs can be available at some areas for education. Most of the time, bachelor’s degrees are regarded more highly in the professional field than accredited two-year programs.
Training & Certification Requirements
No matter where you choose to practice as a veterinarian assistant, you will find that all states require you to hold a professional license that will allow you to maintain a high level of quality of animal health care and safety in the workplace. Once you have finished your chosen degree program, you will be asked to pass a written and oral examination. In many cases, you may also find that you will need to pass a hands-on test in practical conditions so that your ability to carry out common duties expected of vet assistants can be tested. When you pass the examination, you will become registered, licensed or certified depending on your state. It’s worth noting that most employment opportunities come with the provision that employers will expect assistants to complete an internship that will allow them to earn hands-on experience in dealing with animal patients.
