The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Addiction Counseling around the country.
What We Do
Addiction counselors work with people who suffer from addictive behavioral problems, such as gambling, eating disorders, sex, drugs, alcohol, and more. They support and treat these individuals to help them recover from their addiction and make changes to their behaviors. Addiction counselors work one to one with patients, but also in groups, and most use the principles developed in the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 step program. Through the work of addiction counselors, those who are engaged in addictive behaviors learn how to better cope with life’s problems and stresses, and they help them on the road to recovery. They also focus on rebuilding personal and professional relationships, helping them to reestablish their career where possible, and rebuild the bonds with their personal support networks.
Work Environment
Addiction counselors can work in a huge range of settings, including prisons, mental health centers, parole agencies, rehab facilities, juvenile detention facilities, employee assistance programs, halfway houses, sober living facilities, and more. They can also be found in residential rehab facilities, where clients reside there for a certain period of time. Other addiction counselors find employment in outpatient centers, where patients visit for treatment. They can also start their own private practices, where they can work with other counselors or even alone.
How to Become a Addiction Counseling
Becoming an addiction counselor starts with completing a bachelor’s degree. There are certain employment settings that only require a high school diploma, whereas other settings require a master’s or even doctorate degree. Those professionals with the most education are best able to provide proper services to their clients, including one to one counseling. They also need less supervision. Each state usually has its own educational and experience requirements.
Training & Certification Requirements
Addiction counselors have to be licensed if they want to work in a private practice. Each state has different licensing requirements in place, but they all include a master’s degree and between 2,000 and 4,000 hours of supervised clinical work. Furthermore, they have to take and pass an examination and demonstrate the completion of continuous education. Full details are available from the National Board for Certified Counselors.
