The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Behavioral Psychology around the country.
What We Do
Behavioral psychologists are specialists who work with those people who have problems with their behavior and are incapable of resolving these without any help. The majority of behavioral psychologists work with children, as this is where behavioral issues are most often first identified. They treat these issues through the use of talking therapy, as well as equipping patients with better life skills.
Work Environment
There are numerous places where a behavioral psychologist would be able to find employment. These include private practices, schools, universities, nonprofit organizations, mental health clinics, hospitals, and more.
How to Become a Behavioral Psychology
A behavioral psychologist must hold a doctorate degree in psychology first, which can be either a Psy.D. or a Ph.D. Additionally, they must have sufficient clinical experience (usually an internship and a period of supervised work experience), and they will usually be required to have professional certification. All clinical psychologists must also be licensed, although the exact license varies depending on the state in which someone wishes to practice. Those licenses are state-bound, which means that if they were to move, they would need to get a license in that particular state.
Training & Certification Requirements
Behavioral psychologists have a specific practice license, which varies depending on the state in which they work. Additionally, they must take and pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. There are also a number of specializations that a behavioral psychologist can choose from, with certifications offered by the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. To be certified, someone has to have completed the relevant training (up to doctorate degree), as well as internships and supervised work experience.

Behavioral Psychology Job Outlook
The job outlook for psychologists is very good, with the BLS projecting steady growth for the category that includes behavioral psychologists, of 3% between 2019 and 2029. This is due in part to the fact that many existing psychologists are retiring.
Because the educational pathway to become a behavioral psychologist is so lengthy, a real shortage in this type of profession is starting to be felt. Furthermore, as the stigma on mental health is being lifted, and the acknowledgement that behavioral problems can usually be identified and treated in childhood, demand for the services of behavioral psychologists is also rising significantly.
