The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Child Psychology around the country.
What We Do
A child psychologist can work in a variety of different roles, including prevention, intervention, consultation, assessment, and treatment. Patients include the prematurely born babies of addicted parents, autistic children, children with mental illnesses, trauma survivors, children with delayed development, and more. Because these children are often involved with many other professionals, the child psychologist is usually part of a multidisciplinary team, including such professionals as the social worker, the pediatrician, the teacher, the child protection case worker, and so on. An important part of the child psychologist’s job is intervention. This means that they also offer counseling and therapy to family members, teaching everybody how to build better, more supportive relationships with each other and thus ultimately benefit the child. They also frequently work with teenagers in order to prevent teen pregnancies, substance abuse, delinquency, and more.
Work Environment
Child psychologists can work in a range of different settings. Many have their own private clinic, for instance, while others work for government agencies, schools, hospitals, and mental health clinics.
How to Become a Child Psychology
To become a child psychologist, candidates must first complete a doctorate program. This can either be the Psy.D. (clinical based) or the Ph.D. (research based). Either way, the degree explores the nature versus nurture debate, what normal and abnormal behavior patterns are, and what treatment is available. The Psy.D. student will complete this with work experience, whereas the Ph.D. student will complete it with a dissertation.
Training & Certification Requirements
In all states, candidates must be licensed by their state if they wish to practice as a child psychologist. Usually, this means passing the National Psychology Licensing Exam.

Child Psychology Job Outlook
The BLS is expecting a 19% growth in demand for all kinds of psychologists between the years 2014 to 2024.
