The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Cognitive Psychology around the country.
What We Do
A cognitive psychologist most often deals with research in areas, such as language development, memory, decision making, learning, perception, and attention. They scientifically study the brain in an effort to help people deal with mental illnesses. Cognitive psychology specifically studies how the processes of the brain can influence behavior.
Work Environment
Cognitive psychologists can work in a range of different fields. Most often, they conduct research, which is usually specific to a certain cognitive function. Many also choose to teach, often at graduate levels, thereby influencing the next generation of (cognitive) psychologists. Some cognitive psychologists work in clinical settings. They treat client behaviors based on a cognitive theoretical perspective. Those who do this are more closely related to clinical psychologists, evaluating and assessing clients in an effort to treat them and help them recover.
How to Become a Cognitive Psychology
Most cognitive psychologists are educated to doctoral degree level. They can choose to either complete a Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology), which is most suitable to those wanting to work in clinical settings, or a Ph.D. in Psychology, which is more suitable for those wanting to teach at the academic level, or who want to perform research. Generally speaking, an undergraduate degree in psychology is not required to enroll in a master’s degree, after which students can continue on to a doctorate degree. That said, it is a lengthy educational process.
Training & Certification Requirements
Whether or not a cognitive psychologist is licensed depends on the field of work that is chosen. Usually, however, in order for people to call themselves “psychologists”, they must be licensed. In every state, psychologists who want to work in a clinical practice, meaning they treat patients, must hold a license. Every state, however, has different licensing requirements. Cognitive psychologists almost always have to have a doctorate degree as well as a number of years of professional experience. Licenses are usually valid only for a few years, and must be maintained either through continuous education credits, or by retaking the examination. There are also a number of different psychology boards, which can also certify cognitive psychologists. While these certifications are never mandatory, they do demonstrate that such persons are committed to their own professional achievements and pride.
