What We Do
Counseling psychologists are a form of professional psychologist who is responsible for helping individuals with mental and emotional health problems to get through common issues with their job, social life, or home. These professionals regularly focus on helping individuals with specific issues, such as substance abuse, marriage and family problems, behavioral disorders, and more, and many start their own practices based on their chosen specialty.
Work Environment
Counseling psychologists can often find employment in a range of different environments, including schools, hospitals, business, government offices, rehabilitation centers, and mental health clinics. Some will also open their own clinics according to their specialty choice.
How to Become a Counseling Psychology
Aspiring counseling psychologists will need to begin their career by earning a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. Most related fields include psychology or education. Once they have earned their bachelor’s degree, these students will be able to continue to earn their master’s degree in counseling or psychology, before obtaining either a doctor of philosophy in psychology, or a doctor of psychology degree. A PhD program will often focus on research and be more appropriate for those who want to work in a research setting. On the other hand, Psy D programs will focus on giving students the tools that the need to understand research that is currently available and apply that research to clinical practices.
Training & Certification Requirements
Besides educational requirements at a doctoral level, all practicing counseling psychologists will be required to obtain licensure by the state in which they choose to work. For license to be applied for, most states will require the completion of a doctoral degree and a clinical post-doctoral internship, as well as a passing score on the examination for the professional practice of psychology. Some states will also require an examination on ethics. Practicing counseling psychologists who choose to focus their career or practice in a specific area, such as treating a specific disorder or within a certain population will need to consider getting certifications that designate their specialty. Psychologists often need several years of practice at a clinical level before they will be able to qualify for a specialty certification.
