The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Educational Psychology around the country.
What We Do
An educational psychologist applies psychological techniques and principles for treating developmental disorders within educational settings. These professionals also look at behavioral and learning problems, create performance plans and evaluate these, counsel families and students, and more. They often work as part of a multi-disciplinary educational team, helping other educational specialists improve on their learning and teaching strategies.
Work Environment
An educational psychologist is most commonly employed within a public school, from colleges to elementary. Some are found in universities, private schools, clinics, hospitals, and community treatment centers. Finally, some have been able to establish their own practices.
How to Become a Educational Psychology
An educational psychologist needs to hold an advanced degree in psychology to be able to practice his or her profession. This is usually the Ed.S. (Education Specialist) degree, which includes 60 credit hours of study and some 1,200 hours of supervised work. It is possible to complete a doctorate degree in school psychology as well. During their course, educational psychologists learn about how mental health affects the development of students, which is why they learn about both psychology and education.
Training & Certification Requirements
Educational psychologists have to be licensed to work in their chosen field. The exact requirements for licensure vary from one state to another. The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards lists which are requirements for each type of psychologist in each geographical area. Licensure usually has to be maintained through continuous education credit, or by retaking the relevant examination.

School and educational psychologists are not usually found in the top 10% of earners, however. This is mainly due to the fact that they often work for public schools, where salaries are often restricted due to serious budget constraints. That said, those who work independently are able to set their own prices and they have the potential to earn as much as they want. The salary range from bottom 10% to top 10% of earners is between $41,110 and $118,310 per year.
Educational Psychology Job Outlook
The job outlook for psychologists is very good. According to the BLS, a growth in demand of 19% is expected between 2014 and 2024, which is much faster than the national average for most other psychologists.
