The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Hospital Psychology around the country.
What We Do
Hospital psychologists are also known as clinical psychologists and they work typically within hospital and medical settings to help look after patients on an emotional and mental level. Professionals who work in this area will use their finely-honed communication and analytical techniques to help clients improve their quality of life and manage serious issues that they might be experiencing at any given time.
Work Environment
Most of the time, hospital psychologists will work within a hospital facility, but they might also branch out to consider employment in mental health facilities and other healthcare environments too. If hospital psychologists choose to obtain specialization in a specific area of psychology, they may find that additional job opportunities open up.
How to Become a Hospital Psychology
A degree in clinical psychology is often required for hospital psychologists. Obtaining a degree at this level means starting with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, before moving on to a master’s level degree in clinical psychology. Keep in mind that you will need to consider combined programs that may result in getting you your doctoral degree in less time than it would take to obtain doctorate and master’s degrees separately. Because licensure as a hospital psychologist is mandated at a state level, candidates may be required to complete post-doctoral training in their specific jurisdiction. They should check with their state’s board of psychology to learn what requirements are necessary.
Training & Certification Requirements
Requirements for licensure can vary according to state, but many are quite similar and will include graduating from a specifically accredited doctoral program, as well as completing a number of hours in supervised experience. Once they have received licensure, one of the most important things a hospital psychologist can do is to maintain their license. This will require them to engage in a continuing education – the number of hours they need to devote to this education will vary according to state. Also, clinical psychologists at a registered level will need to keep track of requirements in their local area.
