What We Do
Humanistic psychology is a very interesting field of psychology, in which professionals look at ways to maximize a group or individual’s potential. They achieve this by helping them to create a more positive view of not just themselves, but also the world around them. The focus is strongly on certain issues, such as intuition, spirituality, and creativity. Humanistic psychology is often seen not as a career title, but rather as a theoretical approach to the discipline. As such, as humanistic psychologist may work in fields such as advocacy, education, research, or clinical practice.
Work Environment
Humanistic psychologists can work in a wide range of different fields. They are commonly found in faith based nonprofit organizations, including drug and rehab facilities, or within providers of spiritual marriage counseling. Others focus strongly on research, developing new humanistic principles and how these link to the overall mental well being of individuals and groups of people. Others still, run a private practice or as part of a clinic. Some can be found in the government, others in hospitals and particularly faith based hospitals.
How to Become a Humanistic Psychology
To become a humanistic psychologist, you must first complete a four year bachelor’s degree. While this does not have to be in psychology, it is often recommended to build a solid foundation in this subject area. After the bachelor’s degree, you must enroll in a two year master’s degree, where you can choose the medical psychology specialization. In order to call yourself a psychologist, you must also complete a doctoral degree, with is either the research based Ph.D., or the clinically based Psy.D.
Training & Certification Requirements
Each state has its own requirements in terms of licenses and certification for humanistic psychologists. The American Psychological Association and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards both list what the requirements are within each state. Certification is usually valid for a certain period of time only, and must be maintained either through proof of continuous education credits, or by retaking the examination.
