The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Industrial/Organizational Psychology around the country.
What We Do
Industrial psychologists, who are known more commonly as industrial-organizational psychologists, are professionals who are responsible for studying the psychology at work within a standard workplace. There are several career paths open to these professionals, and many work in human resources or management consulting, while others might do some research or teach in an academic setting. Psychologists who perform research work independently and spend a lot of time in an office.
Work Environment
Most organizational or industrial psychologists will find employment within a specialist office setting, and many will work alongside human resource departments, either as a staff member or in collaboration with another psychologist. Some will be employed by government agencies or mental healthcare organizations.
How to Become a Industrial/Organizational Psychology
Aspiring industrial or organizational psychologists will need to begin their education and pursuit of their career by earning a bachelor’s degree through a relevant program. Though there is no specific option of study required, students who do not major in psychology will want to take some foundation courses in psychology principles, social psychology, and statistics. Some colleges will even offer the opportunity to focus on a specific industrial or organizational major which could present an interesting solution to students who know which career they want to pursue early in their education. Practicing I-O psychology generally requires a master’s degree, and master’s degree programs will vary in the requirements and type of careers for which they will prepare their graduates. Some students who want to focus on teaching in their career will choose to obtain a PhD through a doctoral program, which may take between three and five years to complete.
Training & Certification Requirements
Almost all states will require anyone who wants to use the job title of psychologist to earn a license. In order to become licensed, individuals must not only graduate from their doctoral degree program of choice, but also complete a supervised internship and pass an examination for professional practice in psychology. Licensure may not always be appropriate for those who work within the private sector, or for some teachers or researchers.
