What We Do
Mental health psychologists work very closely together with groups, individuals, and families. Their role is to review what the emotional and mental disorders that are present within their clients. If any mental disorders are identified, this type of psychologist will help to develop treatment plans that increase overall well being. Besides assessing and treating the disorder, this field of psychology also concerns itself with preventative care, promoting good mental health practices across the community. A strong focus is on common disorders, including depression, anxiety, addiction, substance abuse, trauma, suicidal behavior, low self esteem, grief, and stress. Mental health psychologists usually work as part of an integrated mental health team, working together with various other professionals.
Work Environment
Mental health psychologists are able to work in a range of different settings. These include state, local, and private health care facilities. Many also run private practices, either to provide direct services to clients, or to work as a consultant for other organizations. Some are found within businesses to work on employee mental health, others work in schools, community centers, or even NGOs.
How to Become a Mental Health Psychology
To become a mental health psychologist, you must first complete a four year bachelor’s degree. While this does not have to be in psychology, it is often advisable to build a solid foundation of the subject area. After the bachelor’s degree, you must enroll in a two year master’s degree, where you can choose the medical psychology specialization. In order to call yourself a psychologist, you must also complete a doctoral degree, with is either the research based Ph.D., or the clinically based Psy.D.
Training & Certification Requirements
Each state has its own requirements in terms of licenses and certification for the mental health psychologist. The American Psychological Association and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards both list what the requirements within each state are. Certification is usually valid for a certain period of time only, and must be maintained either through proof of continuous education credits, or by retaking the examination.
